I took Ash's Mole to my water media class with Charlie Myers, thinking to spend the three-hour session working on her mole, and lo and behold, he decided to show us a video--something he normally does (DID!) only during lunch. It was a Tom Jones video and then we were told, after seeing the video once, to paint the picture described in the video. We are supposed to be learning how to make fog and rain falling from clouds and how to block out white areas etc. Mine didn't work too well in the mole--the paper didn't respond the way the arches paper does, so I did a second one on real Arches 140-pound paper, which will be in Ash's pocket. It's smaller, but came out better, I think.

The video we watched was a full-length Tom Jones video of a whole painting, but here's a short one on You-tube that is very similar (but not exactly the same) as the beginning of the one we watched.

I think they both look great, though I like the white highlights in the yellow/green trees in the vertical one. Very nice scene.
I'm unavoidably late on this round too. The first week I had the book I couldn't work on it one scrap and I just don't want to rush it. I've been looking forward to working on it all this coming weekend.
I thought I had a job to fund my fun time, but somehow it keeps hogging all my free time!
Personally, I like the top image more, if not only because it seems to translate better in a horizontal format. Both are beautifully done however, and make me long for a nice, peaceful vacation.
These remind me of the place we just vacationed at The Woolverton Inn in Stockton, NJ. (Just outside New Hope, PA) They had fabulous private cottages and this was close to the view from ours. Beautiful!!!

What I liked about the 2nd one was the ease in handling the paints and water and fog and so on. But it's a much smaller picture, and the larger horizontal format allows for better positioning in some ways. Well, anyway, I did two--and I may do a few more just for the sake of practicing the techniques, as once they become part of my repertoire, I'll be able to use them in new compositions--I'm really still a beginner!

I had intended to paint on my own in there for three hours--which is what we usually do, and he comes around to give ideas, suggestions etc. I didn't know he had a lesson plan!
But I did it twice and may do it one more time and maybe I'll have learned some useful techniques to apply elsewhere. I hope.
